Welcome back. I hope you all enjoyed Thanksgiving yesterday, and a full year of baseball after last year’s incredibly weird season.
As ever, there’s a lot to be getting through before we get rolling with next year, so apologies for the huge wall of text that’s incoming. I think I’ve covered the main points, but as ever if there are questions or you spot something I’ve missed then flag it up below.
– Returning GMs
– Minors promotions
– Contracts
– Timelines
– Trading
– Changes for next year
– Questions?
1 – Returning GMs
If you are not returning for next year, please make this known. I believe we are three GMs down heading in to the off-season, and have been trying (unsuccessfully so far) to recruit from other leagues. I’ll step this up over December and head back to the Rotoworld forums and other similar places to fill up if nobody has any recommendations.
2 – Minors promotions
If you have a player who has exceeded the career 130AB/50IP threshold during the course of 2021 you must choose whether to promote him or release him.
I will produce a full list of these players in a separate thread, in which GMs must indicate their decision.
3 – Contracts
Those players who were picked up on FA/WW, or who signed 1 year deals expiring in 2021 have now been removed from Fantrax. I will be updating the 2022 salaries in Fantrax and the respective details on the spreadsheet over the coming weeks.
GMs will have decisions to make on players whose contracts expired in 2021 to either extend them or release them, per the constitution, which states:
“In the off-season in which a player's contract expires, a GM has the option to extend that player for another year. The cost of doing so would be 100% of his original base salary. This only applies to players won at auction, whose initial contract was at least two years - single year deals at auction, and those players picked up in Free Agency during the season would automatically be released.”
As with the minors promotions, I will produce a list of these players in a separate thread, in which GMs must indicate their decision.
If GMs wish to cut any other players (minors or majors) they should announce their decision to do so in this thread too.
Minor leaguers are free to cut in the off-season, while salary cap hits will apply to those players with MLB contracts. If you have cap space available and wish to do so, you can take the full cap hit this year – if you don’t state this preference, the cap hits will automatically be paid out over the course of the player’s contract.
4 – Timelines
I am aware of the potential labour issue between the MLBPA and the league, and have sketched out this timetable on the assumption that there are no work stoppages. Any decision on what to do should there be a labour dispute/player strike will be taken when there’s definitive news on it – for now, we plan for no interruptions.
GMs will have until the 31st December to make the decisions on 2020 contracts and minor leaguers and post them in the appropriate thread.
The FYPD will take place in mid-to-late January on Proboards.
At the conclusion of the draft, the major league auction will take place in February.
On the last day of March, hopefully, we have baseball.
5 – Trading
Trading will open once all GMs who are present have submitted their release and promotion decisions on 2020 contracts and minor leaguers. The latest this will take place is 1st January, but if we’re all up to date at some point in December then so much the better.
6 – Changes for next year
If anyone has any proposed rule amendments, make them known in the forums in the run-up to the new year. We’ll schedule any votes ahead of the auction/draft so that everyone is in possession of the full facts before deciding their roster.
7 – Any questions?
