Our auction will get underway on Monday 8th March
As a reminder for those who went through the inaugural auction, as well as for our new GMs, here are some of the main auction rules and FAQs
Eligibility
All players who meet the below criteria by the start of the auction are eligible to be bid on:
a) Signed to an MLB club, and
b) Not already owned
or
c) A player who has previously appeared in MLB who is yet to sign a contract for 2021 (eg: Yasiel Puig - and hey, I got to use the same example two years in a row...)
Bidding process, rules
To nominate a player, start a thread in the appropriate forum, titled with their:
a) Name
b) MLB team
c) Position
In the body of the post, you should indicate your initial bid for that player's base salary.
All bids must be considered as 'won' when they are made, and so you must have both sufficient budget and roster space to make each bid.
It is NOT permissible to enter a 'zero bid' for a base salary when nominating a player, unless and until a GM has all bar 2 spots filled on their roster and has other live bids pending. All other nominations must start at a minimum of $500k.
Any bid on a player must be at least $250k more than the preceding bid, except in the case of a 'no bid' where the initial bid must meet the $500k minimum salary.
Each GM is allowed to nominate upto two players at any time for auction, so we will have a maximum of 40 players active at any one time.
A GM must have at least one active nomination thread running (ie, bidding underway) to be able to bid on any player. This is to ensure that we keep up a reasonable pace with the auction.
For a player to be won, the final bid must remain standing for 24 hours at which point the player will be added to your roster. Bids may not be deleted.
Once your nominated player(s) has officially been won, whether by you or another team, you are then able to nominate another.
Once players have been won, the commissioner will lock the thread and move them to the appropriate part of the forum, updating the league spreadsheet in the process.
Each GM must leave the auction with a roster of 23 major leaguers. A reminder that each team must also roster a minimum of 10 minor leaguers at all times.
Upon completion of the auction each GM will be asked to assign a length to each player's contract, between 1 and 5 years. Contracts increase by 10% of the base salary in each year. For further explanation of this, see the league spreadsheet.
Questions
How much can I spend?
The total salary available to each GM in LS Dynasty is $100m, which covers both the MiLB salaries, as well as the MLB auction.
See the other thread pinned to the top of the board regarding opening budgets to start the auction, and available spaces.
It is each GM's responsibility to keep a track of their remaining budget. This can be done through the league spreadsheet by checking the 'Salaries' tab, where the 'Max Bid' column indicates the maximum bid left for each GM (working under the assumption that any other remaining slots will be filled at league minimum, taking the team to the extent of their $100m cap). The spreadsheet will be updated regularly throughout the auction, but bear in mind this figure may be out of date if players have been won since the last update.
If the commissioner notices, or his attention is called to, a team that has overbid on player(s) relative to their available cap then any active bid(s) will be made null and void, and the previous winning bid reinstated. The GM concerned will be barred from winning the player(s) concerned.
Any further infraction(s) of overbidding will result in the same punishment, plus the removal of $1m of cap space per infraction for the 2021 auction.
Do I need to spend all my money?
No. It is worth remembering that a little roster, and therefore payroll, flexibility throughout the season is desirable, in order to acquire free agents. Each free agent picked up will cost the league minimum of $500k, but the cost of dropping a player is 50% of his remaining salary. If a GM spends their full $100m and then wishes to drop a player on league minimum salary, this will only afford them $250k of cap space, meaning they would be unable to pick up a free agent.
It is also worth noting that when a player is placed on the IL, their salary doesn't count towards your cap, but the principle remains that you still need the cap flexibility to drop their short-term replacement once the player returns from the IL, if necessary.
What happens if the same player is nominated twice/there are duplicate threads?
In the event of duplicate threads for the same player, whichever was posted first will become the default 'official' thread. The commissioner will lock/delete any duplicate threads.
What if someone nominates a player who is not eligible/more players than they are allowed to?
As above - the commissioner will lock/delete threads as appropriate.
Who decides when 24 hours has passed?
That will solely be down to the clock on the forum. Any bid timestamped more than 24 hours after the preceding one will be deleted, and the player awarded accordingly. While it is your prerogative to bid whenever you like, please do your fellow leaguemates the courtesy of keeping those last minute bids to a minimum where possible - obviously life and work get in the way, and you may only be able to check in on the bidding once or twice a day, but it will help keep the auction moving at a reasonable pace if people can be prompt with their bids and nominations.
Can I sign a prospect in the MLB auction who went undrafted in the FYPD?
Yes. That player wouldn't benefit from the standard rolling $500k salary that all minor leaguers receive, however, and would have to be given a fixed term contract along with all the other major league players. They could then be demoted to your minor league roster, assuming you have the space.
Wasn't there something about contract limits between 45 and 70 years or something?
That only applied to the initial auction to create a small amount of roster and free agent churn each year throughout the early years of the league. You now have the freedom to give your players all 1 year deals or all 5 year deals, or whatever you see fit.
